Fabric and patterns from the Calvin Klein’s Spring 2010 Women’s Collection
Commissioned by Calvin Klein Inc.
Presented in Los Angeles, Seoul, and New York City
Pattern Folds was inspired by the materials, forms and process of fashion designer Francisco Costa. For this commission, the artist created a series of over 30 sculptures out of the unique fabrics from Calvin Klein’s Spring 2010 Collection. After the fabrics were stiffened, the actual patterns for each “look” in the runway collection were cut away to present “voids.” The pieces were then folded to regain their upright position, suggesting the body. The folds reference origami, where the folding of a flat, rectangular shape ultimately generates a complex, three-dimensional figurative form. While experiencing the installation, viewers discover the relationship between their own bodies and these abstract cutouts in space.
