Jean Shin: Elevated
Elevated takes inspiration from what was simultaneously lost and gained by the momentous dismantling of the Second Ave El in the 1940s and connects it to the present-day milestone construction of the Second Ave Subway line on the same site in 2016. Elevated at the 63rd Street Station appropriates images of the El structures taken from archival photographs and re-imagines them in contemporary context with dynamic materials of ceramic, mosaic and glass. While present-day commuters descend underground in the new subway station, the artwork transports them with images that capture the memory of riding the elevated.
